| Description | Tropea is located on the westernmost tip of the Italian peninsular not far from Capo Vaticano which itself overlooks the Messina Straits between Calabria and Sicily. Tropea is a municipality located within the province of Vibo Valentia, in Calabria (southern Italy). The town is a famous bathing place located situated on a reef, in the gulf of St. Euphemia connected with the mainland by a narrow strip in the Tyrrhenian Sea, toward the south with respect to Vibo Valentia and northward with respect to Ricadi and Capo Vaticano. | Tourist Attractions | In Tropea's harmonious warren of lanes, seek out the old Norman Cattedrale, whose interior displays a couple of unexploded US bombs from World War II, with grateful prayer to the Madonna attached to each. From belvedere at the bottom of the main square, Piazza Ercole, the church and Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria della Isola glistens on a rocky pormontory above an aquamarine sea. Stroll out to visit the church on a path lined wiht fishermen's caves. Of Basilian origin, the church was remodeled in Gothic style, then given another face-lift after an earthquake in 1905. The interior has an 18th-century nativity and some fragments of medieval tombs. Tropea has got more than 15 churches of historic-religious value. Undoubtedly, the most beautiful landscapes of Tropea are to be found along the coast, that is characterized by white, beautiful and unpolluted beaches, in harmony with the accomodation facilities. | |
| Transport | if you want to travel by train, the railway line connects regularly Tropea to Lamezia Terme, Reggio Calabria, Naples, Rome and Milan. Otherwise, if you are coming by car from the North, you have to take the A3 motorway Salerno-Reggio Calabria and leave it in Pizzo. Then you can drive on along the Vibo Marina main road as far as Tropea. From the South you have to take the A3 motorway Salerno-Reggio Calabria and leave it in Rosarno, then you have to drive on along the main road towards Nicotera, where you will find the indications to reach Tropea. By bus: it is possible to reach Vibo Valentia by the regular buses that connect it to Tropea. | |
