San Bartolomeo

San Bartolomeo, in the hills just outside the city of Reggio Emilia, surrounded by spectacular landscapes and with a wealth of history and ageless traditions.

Description

San Bartolomeo, in the hills just outside the city of Reggio Emilia, surrounded by spectacular landscapes and with a wealth of history and ageless traditions.

The influence of Matilde di Canossa, the powerful Countess involved in one of the most famous incidents in medieval European history, still dominates. Thanks to her mediation, on January 27, 1077, the Emperor Henry IV, excommunicated in 1075, was finally received and pardoned by Pope Gregory VII after waiting humbly for three days barefoot in the snow. Matilde built a magnificent line of defence made up of a chain of interlocking castles in the Apennines outside Reggio Emilia. Today, after long and careful restoration work, these strategically located castles and outlook towers can still be seen. Even now it is easy to see how, given the specific lie of the land, they gave complete control over the medieval territory from hills to plains below.

It is in the fascinating context, restored to its ancient splendour, that the Fonti di Matilde Golf and Spa Resort has been created - the end result of love of nature and the passion for golf of its founding members.

Visits are recommended to the church of S. Antonino, the parish of the Madonna della Battaglia, and to the charming natural oasis of Bianello just under the castle, or to the park of Roncolo. Don't miss the Matildic procession, one of the most famous historical occasions, accompanied by other inviting events.
