| Description | Ostuni, white with light and lime, overlooks the Adriatic sea, offering itself to the visitor in all its radiant beauty. Located at the edge of the Itria Valley, it preserves the reserved bashfulness of the tumbledown villages of this rather intriguing strip of land, together its own gaiety and liveliness, typical of the towns which have developed beside the sea, from which it is just six kilometres away. There are also a number of excellent restaurants in Ostuni. The so-called “Città Bianca” (White City), Ostuni seems to be made up of light and white, to visit it is an unforgettable experience. You go up towards the historical centre through a succession of narrow, winding streets made of white houses pressed together, painted windows, arches and steps. We suggest you take your time along the lanes and around the crafts shops: all of a sudden just around a corner you will behold the wonderful view of the underlying valley to the sea. The 15th century cathedral represents a feat of the local stone, it has a splendid facade and an imposing 24 ray rose window. The Palazzo Municipale and the Museo delle Civiltà Preclassiche della Murgia are also noteworthy. Music festivals and many typical restaurants and bars where you can listen to live music or savour delicious local dishes brighten the night life. You can find discos along the coast. The cuisine in this area is genuine and full of inventive. Flavours from the vegetable gharden mix with the aroma of seafood, enhanced by the extraordinary olive oil of this area and accompanied by tasty cheeses, “taralli”, “friselle” and generous, rich wines. |
