MontalcinoBeautiful walled town in the heart of Tuscany, famous for its Brunello wine and stunning panoramas. |
| Description | The municipality of Montalcino is located 40 kilometers to the south of Siena. A town of 5,150 inhabitants built on a hill dominating the Ombrone and Asso Valleys. Its surface area of 243 km2 makes it one of the most extensive municipalities in central Italy. Montalcino is a member of the association "Borghi più belli d'Italia" (Most beautiful villages in Italy) and has been awarded the "Paesi Bandiera Arancione" (Orange Banner) seal of approval. The area is connected with the Slow Food movement and has a goal of sustainable tourism based on local traditions, culture and produce. The town is surrounded by a natural amphitheatre of a gentle landscape of rolling hills, golden fields, olive groves and vineyards. To the north, within easy day tripping distance, lies the ancient city of Siena. Southern Siena is a tranquil land dotted with ancient churches and little villages, and is within reasonable driving distance of the vast nature reserves of Grosseto and the Maremma to the west, and the bird life and water sports of Lake Trasimeno (Umbria) to the east. The town celebrates 10 years of the "Jazz & Wine in Montalcino" Festival in 2007. The success of the event has put it on the map of jazz and wine lovers from all over Europe. The event is organized by the Montalcino Council and Jazz & Image in Rome. Many of the big stars of Italian Jazz (Rava, Gatto, Boltro, Giuliani, Giammarco to name a few) will be performing along with international Jazz stars such as Mike Mainieri & Steps Ahead and renowned "Down Beat Magazine Rising Star" for two consecutive years, Jeremy Pelt. The festival is a union between music and wine in the home of Brunello, and manages to create a whole new experience for aficionados of jazz and the Italian wine culture. | |
| Province | Siena (SI) The picturesque city is an important cultural centre and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is especially known for its celebrated Palio delle contrade, a horse race held twice a year, in which each horse and rider represent one of the seventeen contrade. According to legend, Siena was founded by Senius, son of Remus, who was in turn the brother of Romulus, after whom Rome was named. Statues and other artwork depicting a she-wolf suckling the young twins Romulus and Remus can be seen all over the city of Siena. Siena's cathedral, the Duomo, begun in the 12th century, is one of the great examples of Italian gothic architecture. Its main facade was completed in 1380. Its campanile and baptistry make a fine group. Inside is the famous Gothic octagonal pulpit by Nicola Pisano (1266–1268) supported on lions, and the labyrinth inlaid in the flooring, traversed by penitents on their knees. Beneath the Duomo, in the baptistry is the baptismala marvellous font with bas-reliefs by Donatello, Ghiberti, Jacopo della Quercia and other 15th-century sculptors. The Museum of the Opera del Duomo contains Duccio's famous Madonna (1308–1311). The shell-shaped Piazza del Campo, the town main square, which houses the Palazzo Pubblico, and the Torre del Mangia, is famous for hosting the Palio. The Palazzo Pubblico (townhall), hosting the mural of "Good Government" by Ambrogio Lorenzetti, a magnificent example of late-Medieval/early Renaissance art as well as a representation of the utopia of urban society as conceived during that period. | |
