Canossa CastleCanossa symbolises Matildic history. Matilde di Canossa, warrior, politician, polyglot figure on a European level |
| Description | The Canossa Castle, built on a white Arenaceous cliff which has been a national monument since the last century, however only a few ruins remain of its antique splendor. Undoubtedly, though, its historical value remains which makes it a cultural destination visited each year by numerous art and cultural tourists, both Italian and foreign. Each year more than 30,000 "pilgrims" come here following in the footsteps of Henry IV. Canossa symbolises Matildic history. Matilde di Canossa, warrior, politician, polyglot figure on a European level and best known personality of the dynasty, was born in Mantova in 1046, daughter of Bonifacio and Beatrice of Lorena, cousin of Henry of Franconia, who would become Emperor Henry IV. With the advent of Gregory VII's papacy a period ofhostility between the papacy and the empire took place, and in these hilly Emilian lands, the hostility was at its most intense. The Canossa castle, built around the middle of the 10th century by Atto Adalberto, Matilde's ancestor, became the centre of Canossa's power. Inherited by Matilde in 1052, the fort is well known in Italy as well as abroad as it was the backdrop to many important events, connected especially to the fight between the papacy and the empire for the investiture of prelates. the peak of Canossa's fame was the humiliation suffered by the German emperor Henry IV in January 1077. Legend has it that for three days he waited in the open air waiting to be received by the Pontiff Gregory VII, Matilde's guest, to ask for remission of the excommunication (from which the famous adage "andare a Canossa" or "go to Canossa" derives). Matilde, who died in 1115 in Mantovan territory, has rested since 1644 in St Peter's Basilica in the Vatican: this detail should indicate the type of consideration surrounding her deeds. Her signature was also curious as well as her way of "presenting herself" to her contemporaries: "Matilde, Dei gratia si quid est" (Matilde, for the grace of God, she is something) | |
